TransRe swings to $124mn U/W gain, grows GWP 34%

TransRe generated a $124mn underwriting profit in the second quarter, bouncing back from an underwriting loss a year ago, as the reinsurer grew casualty and specialty premiums by 40% to just over $1bn and grew gross premiums by 34% overall to $1.5bn written.

The reinsurer’s performance helped push Alleghany’s (re)insurance businesses to a $174mn underwriting gain in total. A $49mn underwriting profit within Alleghany’s insurance division also helped the holding company’s earnings climb higher.
