Axis continued its drive towards underlying margin expansion in the second quarter, growing underwriting profits by 70% to $148mn, fueled by higher gains from its insurance division.

The Bermuda-based carrier earned $2.00 per share in operating profits in the second quarter, beating analysts’ $1.40-per-share consensus estimate.
