The warmest December on record capped off a year of weather extremes for the US, the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) said on Tuesday.

The December contiguous US temperature was 39.3 degrees Fahrenheit, 6.7 degrees above average, the agency said.

The year itself ranked as the fourth warmest on record, NOAA said, with some states like Massachusetts seeing very wet years, while drought reigned...
