Educator-focused carrier Horace Mann’s underwriting income plunged to $0.3mn in Q4 of 2021 from $16mn a year earlier, as the company’s core underwriting results were hit by a return to pre-pandemic claims frequency in its auto business.

The Illinois-based carrier’s combined ratio spiked to 99.9% from 90.2% in Q4 2020 following a deterioration in its reported loss ratio, which jumped to 71.6%
