The senior executive will lead the company’s strategic underwriting and data analytic efforts, succeeding BHHC’s former CUO, Mark Barba, who retired in June.
An industry veteran with 18 years’ experience, Engell joins from Republic Indemnity, where he led the data analytics and strategic planning groups as SVP and CUO. Previously, he held executive positions at Glow Insurance Services and ICW Group.
“Danny is a solutions-oriented executive with substantial experience building and leading complex, established insurance functions as well as new ventures,” said Rob Darby, president and CEO of BHHC.
“His industry experience with underwriting strategy and operations along with a passion for analytics and automation is a great asset as we continue to grow and diversify to meet the needs of our policyholders.”
BHHC is looking to expand in workers' comp at a time where competition is heating up in the business line.
WR Berkley recently launched Berkley Enterprise Risk Solutions, a workers’ compensation business with Wayne Bryan as president. The company has also appointed Hale Johnston COO of the new unit.
Last month, a report from Ivans Index showed that workers’ comp was the only line where rates did not rise, compared to nearly all other classes where average premium renewal rates increased in May 2022, year on year.
