Southern California Edison self-insures in bid to slash costs

US utility company Southern California Edison (SCE) has chosen to self-insure rather than purchase its usual ~$1bn annual wildfire protection, this publication can reveal.

The move comes amid increasing concern about the rising cost of wildfires in the state, after a run of destructive blazes over the past decade and a recalibration, on the part of (re)insurers, of the true cost of coverage.
