Hurricane Idalia is set to intensify rapidly as it continues its path across the Gulf of Mexico towards the northwest coast of Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The NHC said there was an inner core now present in the storm as it accelerates northwards, and that Idalia was set to be an “extremely dangerous major hurricane” come landfall on Wednesday.
