The first nine months of 2023 have set a record for billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in the US, the most for one year since 1980, when the country began compiling such data, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information.

So far this year, a total of 24 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters have been confirmed.

The list comprises 18 severe storm events, two flooding events, one tropical cyclone, one winter storm, one wildfire and one drought and heatwave...
